Can you just buy compost?
You can buy compost in bags, and that’s fine for a small garden or for container gardening, but I almost always go for bulk compost because it’s much less expensive and I usually want to bring in at least a cubic yard (3ft x 3ft x 3ft), which is 765 liters of compost – that would be a lot of bags!

When should I add compost to my garden?
At a minimum, you should add compost in spring shortly after the grass has begun growing again and again in the fall. Midsummer is another excellent time if you’d like another topdressing session to your rotation. Adding compost is also a great way to aerate the soil or to adjust soil that has a lot of clay or sand.

In general, homemade compost is better than store-bought compost if it is properly prepared and nutritionally balanced. However, like all things, there are pros and cons to both. Homemade compost helps cut down on waste, but you’re limited by the material.

The general rule of thumb is 1/4 to 1/2 inch if applying to the top of the soil and 1 to 2 inches if you plan to amend the soil. Recommended maximums are 30% compost in a soil blend, but no more than 25% compost in containers or raised beds.
